Pals Reckling, Appel Square Off in Rice-Stanford Opener

03/09/2012, 11:29am (CST)
By Ira Green, POLL President

Little boys at POLL dream about playing college baseball and pitching in a big game. We have had a number of players realize this dream. However, I cannot recall at any time having two former POLL players face each other in a Division 1 baseball game. Tonight, Rice Senior, Matthew Reckling (POLL player through 2004) and Stanford Junior, Mark Appel (POLL player through 2003) will face each other in their opener in Palo Alto. Stanford is ranked No. 2 in the nation and Rice is ranked No. 4.

Appel was part of the 12-year old team that went to the Little League State finals in 2003. Reckling, a year older, was a standout at POLL and Kinkaid. His brother Stephen, also a great POLL and high school player, coaches in the Juniors division, and Matthew has a number of cousins currently playing at POLL. Both players are projected to do well in the Major League Baseball draft; indeed Appel is projected to go number one (articles on both are on our website).

I have attached below a link to an article in the Houston Chronicle from today, which speaks to this event and mentions POLL. We are very proud of these two young men, and it shows that little boys’ dreams can come true. Go POLL!
